The project consists of the construction of cut-and-cover tunnel cells which originate at the western face of 11th Avenue, travel diagonally across the LIRR West Side Storage Yard (West Rail Yard) continue below the existing NYC Department of Parks and Recreation’s High Line Structure, and terminate south of the High Line before West 30th Street.

Work covered by these Contract Documents includes the following:
a. Demolition of the existing LIRR emergency services building (ESB) and associated utilities
b. Temporary relocation and/or protection of all utilities within the footprint of the tunnel and project area as indicated
c. Installation of instrumentation and monitoring equipment
d. Design and installation of support of excavation retaining structures for the tunnel
e. Jet grouting within the support of excavation as necessary for excavation and outside of tunnel limits as shown in Contract Documents
f. Design and installation of underpinning and permanent re-support of the High Line structure within and adjacent to the tunnel limits as shown in Contract Documents
g. Excavation of the area of the tunnel and disposal of material removed from the excavation
h. Demolition of existing Segment 2 tunnel cells bulkhead wall
i. Construction of the reinforced concrete tunnel structure, waterproofing and the retaining walls supported on tunnel roof as shown in Contract Documents
j. Backfill of the tunnel area and compaction of the soil
k. Construction of permanent utilities
l. Grading of the yard area and restoration of access road
m. Reestablishment of all railroad utilities necessary for the operation of the yard.
n. Restoration of surface area to pre-existing conditions
