City of Norwalk establishes MWBE certification assistance program

The City of Norwalk, in partnership between the local branch of the NAACP, recently launched a program to increase the number of Norwalk-based companies certified as Connecticut minority and women business enterprises (MWBEs).

To be considered a MWBE within the State of Connecticut, a company must first be recognized as a small business enterprise (SBE) by the state and at least 51 percent owned and operated by a person meeting the definition of a "minority" as laid out in the General Statutes of Connecticut.

The certification period for MWBEs in Connecticut is 2 years, and the Department of Administrative Services sends reminder emails before the expiry of said period. Once certified, an MWBE is eligible to participate in the Supplier Diversity Program, under which all state agencies with a budget of more than $10,000 are required to set aside a percentage of contracts for certified MWBEs. Certified firms are also listed in a public online directory for government procurement officials and contractors to find.

To help eligible businesses become MWBE certified, the City is providing assistance with certification paperwork and workshops offered through the Capacity Building Group and the Connecticut Department of Administrative Services.
