Tacoma begins small, minority, women business disparity study

Published Oct 23, 2017

A study is underway to determine whether small, minority, women, and other disadvantaged businesses are able to fairly compete for City of Tacoma contracts.

With the help of an independent consultant, the city will be soliciting feedback from stakeholders in the community regarding their experiences with Tacoma's procurement processes and the business climate in the city.

"The Disparity Study analysis will assess the level of employment of Tacoma residents working or apprenticing on City-funded construction projects, and it will also focus on identifying contracting barriers for small, disadvantaged, minority and women-owned businesses," said Community and Economic Development Supervisor Keith Armstrong, who oversees the City's Small Business Enterprise (SBE) and Local Employment and Apprenticeship Program (LEAP) offices.

The study was kicked off last week with an informational session open to the public.
