NYS submits application for federal high-speed rail dollars
Earlier this
month, New York State submitted ten applications for $138.1 million from
the High-Speed Intercity Passenger Rail Program (HSIPR). The
applications are for competitive funding that will be awarded out of a
purse of $245 million for high-speed rail improvements controlled by the
Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
"We need this investment for New York's economic future," said Senator
Kirsten E. Gillibrand. "Bringing high speed rail to our state will
connect more commuters and businesses, create jobs immediately, and help
rebuild our economy for the long term, all while reducing pollution.
We've worked hard for a long time to bring high speed rail to New York,
and I will keep fighting to secure as much federal funding as possible."
If awarded, the money requires 20% non-federal funding matching.
The projects range from preliminary environmental engineering studies on
possible rail facilities near Niagara Falls, to full construction of a
new intermodal passenger rail station in Schenectady.
For the current round of HSIPR grant awards, the FRA received 77
applications - totaling more than $8.5 billion - from 25 states.
Recipients of the funding will be announced in Fall 2010.
Last year's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act included $8 billion
for high-speed rail construction around the nation, of which New York
received $151 million. As of the beginning of August, the U.S.
Department of Transportation has delivered only $1.7 million of the
award to New York.
